James Lloyd King Sr and his son, James Lloyd King Jr., founded Electric Motor & Contracting in Chesapeake, Virginia, to provide motor repair services for the ship repair, pulp and paper, steel, chemical, and meat packing industries. The original shop was located on Liberty Street in the South Norfolk area, with eight employees.
After a decade of growth, EMC moves to a bigger facility on Campostella Road in Norfolk.
EMC opens a satellite repair facility in Courtland, Virginia, to better serve customers west of Chesapeake, including paper mills.
EMC outgrows the Campostella location and moves again to its current location on Cook Boulevard in Chesapeake. EMC employs 30 people who work in the 10,000 square foot shop.
EMC launches its Large Motor Division, adding a “high bay” repair shop at the Chesapeake facility. This improvement provides higher crane heights and a large motor test panel.

A large motor machine shop, along with a 12ft VPI tank for large motor rewinds, is added to the Chesapeake location, increasing EMC’s capability and capacity.

EMC expands again with the addition of the large motor disassembly area. The burn out ovens, blasting booth, and paint booth here provide separation from the machine shop and assembly areas, ensuring clean work areas within the assembly bays.
EMC purchases an adjoining property on which a 20,000 square foot pump repair facility and administrative offices are built.
The Nuclear Services Building is constructed for radiologically contaminated motor and pump repairs. This expansion allows EMC to offer onsite radioactive decontamination.
To meet the growing needs of our customers, EMC expands the Chesapeake facility with the construction of a 43,000 square foot climate controlled storage building.
A second Nuclear Services Building is built to increase capacity for nuclear-related motor and pump repair. Along with more floor space, this addition includes a specialized paint booth for the application of “Service Level One” coatings for the nuclear power industry.
EMC continues to operate as a family-owned business building on the core competencies set out in 1960. We specialize in the repair, rebuilding, re-manufacturing, and re-engineering of all electro-mechanical rotating equipment and serve commercial, industrial, and nuclear customers throughout the USA and Canada.
