| Radioactive Materials at EMC
EMC is licensed by the State of Virginia to possess and use radioactive material. Our license enables us to repair,
refurbish, maintain, and store radioactively contaminated components. The license
also allows us to possess and use radioactive material throughout our entire site. All four of our service facilities can handle radioactive material.
The Nuclear Services Building NSB was built in 2010 and is the primary location for EMC to disassemble, clean, repair, coat, and test radiologically contaminated electric motors.
The Machine Shop and small motors repair complex is the primary location we perform precision machining and fabrication to support electric motor repairs. EMC is able to machine, modify, and weld radioactive components in this facility.
The Pump Facility was acquired and refit in 2010. The Pump Facility is the primary location we perform pump disassembly repair and machining. EMC is able to machine, modify and weld radioactive pump components in this facility.
The Controlled Storage Facility was built in early 2011. The Controlled Storage facility is the primary location we store high value and sensitive components in a climate controlled setting. EMC is able to store radioactive material in this facility for any length of time.
The EMC radioactive materials license is backed up by a full and complete radiological controls program. We have chosen to base our program on the philosophy pioneered by the United State Navy for controlling radioactive material. To implement this philosophy we have chosen a staff that possess over 25 years of direct experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
Please Contact Mr. Joe Harverson for more information on the radioactive materials program.
